Hannes Peer and Margraf's La Casa di Marmo at Milan Design Week 2026

architecture-design · 2026-04-29

For Milan Design Week 2026, architect Hannes Peer and the stone company Margraf transformed an underground garage beneath a historic villa's garden on Via Cernaia 1 into La Casa di Marmo, a fully marble-clad domestic space. The project uses Santafiora marble from Manciano in Tuscany for all surfaces, with translucent stones like onyx and quartz treated as paintings. With no natural light, Buzzi & Buzzi created an artificial lighting scheme using zenithal and backlighting to simulate daylight. A central patio features a blade of light and a water sheet, referencing Roman villa courtyards, with sculptures in a reflecting pool. The water installation was the biggest technical challenge for Margraf. The space includes a conversation pit with backlit onyx by Taurini Pianeta Gemme and upholstery by Nalesso. Peer emphasized the collaborative process with Margraf's young management team.
