Hannah Black's ANXIETINA at Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève commissioned British artist Hannah Black (born 1981 in Manchester) to create ANXIETINA, a two-section exhibition curated by Andrea Bellini. The core is NXIETIN, an installation-performance on the second floor, continuing Black's Anxietina saga previously shown at MoMA PS1, Chisenhale, and ICA London. The performance features Black wearing a jacket reading 'insecurity' within a labyrinthine set of inflatable walls used by police and military, with music by Bonaventure and direction by Ebba Fransén Waldhör. Screens display video game environments, and blue walls bear luminescent adhesive figures, mostly sexual. The narrative follows Anxietina, a heroine embodying anxiety that transforms nightly into a benevolent and diabolical force. The third-floor section A – – – – – – A displays posters with performance text fragments, set pieces by Waldhör, videos, sculptures, and remnants of Black's ICA solo show including torn copies of The Situation booklet. Black's practice integrates writing, with publications Dark Pool Party (2016) and Life (2017, with Juliana Huxtable). Works like the Blankets series (2015) fetishize airline company names, while Cloth Mothers (2013) and video Power Cut 1970 (2012) explore technology, affection, and Marxist theory. The exhibition runs until April 22, 2018.
