Hank Green Exposes YouTube's AI Labeling Gaps

Hank Green, a prominent YouTuber and science communicator, has identified a significant flaw in YouTube's AI disclosure policy. The platform currently requires creators to disclose when they use AI to "meaningfully alter or generate photorealistic content," but the policy has notable exceptions and ambiguities. For instance, AI-generated music requires disclosure, but a completely AI-generated video of riding a unicorn through a fantastical world does not, because it is not plausible. Additionally, creators are not required to disclose AI use for idea generation, production assistance (such as creating outlines, scripts, thumbnails, titles, or infographics), or even cloning their own voices for voiceovers. This creates a loophole where a 30-minute video aimed at swaying geopolitical views could be entirely driven by AI—from premise and research to script and voiceover—without any mandatory disclosure. Green argues that this gap is consequential because AI-assisted projects have a distinct feel and logic, and humans approaching topics without AI might find different sources, process more material, and create different outlines, jokes, or digressions. The policy's boundaries are drawn in strange ways, leading to inconsistent requirements. Green's critique highlights the need for more nuanced and comprehensive AI disclosure rules on digital platforms.
