Handcrafted Surfaces: Imperfection, Texture, and Craft in Contemporary Chinese Interiors

In contemporary Chinese interiors, craftsmanship is increasingly valued for how materials are joined and relate to each other, countering the uniformity favored by digital renders. Six projects illustrate three approaches: wood as structure and memory, plaster and terrazzo as atmospheric finishes, and concentrated accents like handmade paper or reclaimed wood. At % Arabica in Chengdu's Kuanzhai Alley, B.L.U.E. Architecture Studio restored a traditional Sichuan residence, stripping black paint from wooden columns and using antique gray bricks, blending minimalist white bar with rustic surfaces. Barn Inside by Unknown design introduces intentionally rough timber structure, leaving cracks and annual rings visible. Terraced Courtyard by Team BLDG involved over 80 full-scale prototypes and textured paint developed with local craftsmen to match the red earth of surrounding mountains. Chapter and Verse Hotel by New Practice Studio in Wuzhen uses natural wood, artisanal plaster, and custom terrazzo to evoke local history. Art Vessels by OPEN Architecture features a luminous wall of handmade Chinese paper laminated with glass, along with custom bronze handles and ceramic tiles. Anadu Pine Villa by Studio8 uses 80% handcrafted reclaimed wood from local markets. These projects demonstrate that craft is not nostalgia but a way to imbue interiors with depth and dedication, making construction legible through texture and imperfection.
