Hana El-Sagini's Surreal Healthcare Installation at 421 Arts Campus

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Hana El-Sagini presents 'Counting Fingers,' a major solo exhibition at 421 Arts Campus in Abu Dhabi, featuring a newly commissioned large-scale installation with over 200 fantastical ceramic objects. The work transforms sterile healthcare spaces—waiting rooms, hospital corridors, doctors' offices—into dreamlike, eerie, and amusing environments. Created after the artist's long battle with illness, the installation blends humans, animals, plants, and objects into semi-distinguishable forms, encouraging viewers to find joy and humor in trauma. The exhibition occupies Gallery 1 and reflects on the nervous system's mechanisms for enduring pain and fear. El-Sagini is part of the 2024 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program, in partnership with The Institute for Emerging Art. The installation view was photographed by Ismail Noor of Seeing Things, courtesy of 421.
