Han Nefkens Foundation's Collaborative Model for Video Art Production and Grants

institutional · 2026-04-20

Founded in 2009 by Dutch author Han Nefkens and currently led by Hilde Teerlinck, the Han Nefkens Foundation promotes video art production through grants and co-commissions, without acquiring artworks. Collaborating with approximately 60 art institutions worldwide, recent beneficiaries include Som Supaparinya, Natasha Tontey, and Panos Aprahamian. A project by Minia Biabiany will be jointly owned by MACBA, MUAC, and The Bass. Nefkens, who began his collection in 2000, established the ArtAids Foundation in 2006. His selection process includes juries from partner organizations. Influenced by Pipilotti Rist, Nefkens evaluates success based on artists' exhibitions, including pieces held by Tate Modern. Funded by family wealth, the foundation is expected to operate for another 10-15 years.
