Han Nefkens Foundation Launches $120,000 Eurasia Moving Image Commission

institutional · 2026-04-19

The Han Nefkens Foundation has launched a significant initiative, the Eurasia Moving Image Commission, with a budget of $120,000, marking its largest commission to date. This project will see collaboration among four institutions across Europe and Asia: Belgium's Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (M HKA), Taiwan's New Taipei City Art Museum, Finland's Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, and Korea's Art Sonje Center. Founded in 2009 by Dutch writer and patron Han Nefkens, this represents the foundation's third partnership with M HKA, while also initiating collaborations with the other three museums. M HKA's associate director, Nav Haq, emphasized Eurasia's role as a cultural interaction zone, highlighting its relevance in the 21st century's multipolar landscape. The commission aims to support artists in creating new video works, with a jury from the involved institutions overseeing the selection process. The foundation will not hold voting rights or ownership of the commissioned pieces, focusing instead on fostering artistic collaboration. The first recipient will be announced by the end of 2026. Since its inception, the Han Nefkens Foundation has evolved into a prominent center for video art, partnering with over 40 museums globally.
