Hamza Walker appointed executive director of LAXART

institutional · 2026-04-24

Hamza Walker, who previously served as the associate curator and education director at the Renaissance Society of Chicago, has been appointed as the new executive director of LAXART. He is taking over from Lauri Firstenberg, the founding director, who resigned in early 2016. Walker collaborated with Aram Moshayedi, a past LAXART curator, to co-organize the 2016 Hammer Biennial. He is set to begin his new position on October 1. Firstenberg, who developed a succession plan last year, identified Walker as her successor, praising him as a significant curator and innovative thinker. This appointment aims to alleviate concerns regarding the future of the nonprofit art organization based in Los Angeles.
