Hammer Museum's 'Perfect Likeness' Exhibition Explores Photographic Composition from 1970s to 2010s

From June 20 to September 13, 2015, Russell Ferguson organized the exhibition 'Perfect Likeness' at The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. This showcase emphasized the evolution of photography in the 1990s and 2000s across Europe, Canada, and the United States, marking a transition from pictorialism to staged imagery. Featured artworks included Robert Mapplethorpe's 'Orchid' (1982), Roe Ethridge's 'Peas and Pickles' (2014), Christopher Williams' 'Department of Water and Power General Office Building' (1994), and Jeff Wall's 'Boxing' (2011) and 'Diagonal Composition' (1993). Additional significant pieces comprised Lucas Blalock's 'Broken Composition' (2011), Stan Douglas' 'Hastings Park' (2008), Sharon Lockhart's 1997 series, Thomas Ruff's 1980s portraits, Elad Lassry's 2013 creation, Catherine Opie's 2012 portrait of Lawrence Weiner, and Gillian Wearing's self-portraits from 2003.
