Hammer Museum in Los Angeles reopens after 20-year renovation

exhibition · 2026-04-27

On March 26, 2023, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, which is part of the University of California, will welcome visitors again after an extensive two-decade renovation. The museum now boasts a $30 million expansion, named in honor of Lynda and Stewart Resnick, situated in the previous City National Bank building. This contribution marks the largest donation in the museum's history. Under the guidance of Director Ann Philbin, the project followed enhancements made in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Since 2014, admission has been free. New artworks include Chiharu Shiota's installation in the lobby and Rita McBride's "Particulates" in the gallery. Opening exhibitions will highlight "Bridget Riley Drawings" and "Cruel Youth Diary," featuring contemporary Chinese photography, alongside the Armand Hammer Collection, Grunwald Center Collection, and Hammer Contemporary Collection.
