Hammer Museum Announces 32 Artists for Made in LA Biennial Addressing California's Cultural Shifts

The Hammer Museum will present the fourth edition of its Made in LA biennial from 3 June to 2 September 2018. Curators Anne Ellegood and Erin Christovale selected 32 artists through over 200 studio visits, with participants ranging in age from 28 to 97. While not explicitly political, the exhibition responds to cultural transformations following the 2016 U.S. election and their specific impact on California. Themes will explore urban infrastructure changes, including population growth, real estate development, and the expanding art scene. The show also examines bodily experiences under social, physiological, and psychological pressures, alongside desires for community and local belonging. Artists were chosen for their engagement with contemporary cultural issues and belief in art's role in social discourse. The biennial features Carmen Argote, James Benning, Diedrick Brackens, Carolina Caycedo, Neha Choksi, Beatriz Cortez, Mercedes Dorame, Celeste Dupuy-Spencer, Aaron Fowler, Nikita Gale, Jade Gordon, Megan Whitmarsh, Lauren Halsey, EJ Hill, Naotaka Hiro, John Houck, Luchita Hurtado, Gelare Khoshgozaran, Candice Lin, Charles Long, Nancy Lupo, Daniel Joseph Martinez, MPA, Alison O’Daniel, Eamon Ore-Giron, taisha paggett, Christina Quarles, Michael Queenland, Patrick Staff, Linda Stark, Flora Wiegmann, Suné Woods, and Rosha Yaghmai.
