Hamish Fulton's Walking Art at CRAC Languedoc-Roussillon
The exhibition 'En Marchant' at CRAC Languedoc-Roussillon in Sète, curated by Muriel Enjalran and Noëlle Tissier, runs from October 30, 2013 to February 2, 2014. It features a new project produced for the center alongside older works (murals, editions, video) documenting Fulton's walks between water sources from 1988 to 2012. The artist has been walking since the 1970s, a practice often linked to land art or conceptual art but transcending categories. A central piece, '32 Walks Map 1971-2012 (Europe)', presents a map of his walks with the statement: 'Unlike a drawn line, a walked line can never be erased.' For CRAC, Fulton walked 23 days across the Pyrenees from Hendaye to Llançà, connecting the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, resulting in paintings and photographs. The installation encourages visitors to physically engage with the landscape, making reading performative. Fulton's work addresses not only landscape but also culture, history, and politics, as seen in pieces related to China and Tibet.
