Halmar, PAU, and ASTM selected to lead Penn Station renovation
Amtrak has chosen Halmar International, PAU, and ASTM as the master developer team for New York Penn Station's renovation. The consortium, named Penn Transformation Partners, will deliver a new grand entrance on Eighth Avenue leading to a new train hall. Madison Square Garden will remain but receive new cladding for a classical look, suggesting PAU's previous design will be replaced. No renderings were released. Federal Railroad Authority administrator David Fink stated the new station will be an architectural icon accommodating more passengers during rush periods. Cramped walkways will be replaced with open concourses, and retail and wayfinding upgrades will enhance passenger experience. Track capacity will expand through limited through-running on regional rail. U.S. Transportation Secretary Deputy Steve Bradbury said the redesign increases capacity at America's busiest transit hub. Amtrak special advisor Andy Byford and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy oversaw the procurement process, which began last August. Halmar, PAU, and ASTM were shortlisted in January alongside Fengate Capital with SOM, Grimshaw, and Arup, and Macquarie Capital. Preliminary design starts next, with shovels in the ground targeted by end of 2027.
