Hacking the Heist: AR App Returns Stolen Art to Museum Frames
Boston-based startup Cuseum has launched Hacking the Heist, an augmented reality app that virtually restores stolen artworks to their original frames. The app was inspired by the infamous 1990 theft at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, where 13 masterpieces by Rembrandt, Degas, Manet, and Vermeer were stolen and never recovered. Using a smartphone camera pointed at the empty frames still hanging in the museum, users can see the stolen paintings reappear in place. Currently, the app features only Rembrandt's "Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee" and "A Lady and Gentleman in Black," with plans to add works by Degas, Manet, and Vermeer. Cuseum CEO Brendan Ciecko stated that the idea came from a colleague working with AR, emphasizing that the experience is cultural and artistic, not a game like Pokémon Go. The Gardner Museum has not yet officially partnered with Cuseum, but Ciecko hopes the institution will adopt the app to inspire Boston public school children and art enthusiasts. The app represents a growing trend of using digital tools to enhance museum experiences, as seen in previous initiatives like the Museo del Novecento in Milan bringing Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo's "Il Quarto Stato" to life.
