H&M, Zalando and Amazon enter the resale fashion market

market-auction · 2026-04-27

The resale fashion market is growing rapidly, driven by Millennials and Gen Y consumers who value online shopping and sustainability. H&M-owned brand Cos launched Resell in the UK and Germany in September 2020, with a global rollout by year-end. H&M also operates Sellpy. Zalando introduced a resale platform in Germany and Spain, expanding to four more countries by October 2020, after two years of testing via Zalando Wardrobe. Amazon launched its Luxury store on mobile with Oscar de la Renta as the first partner, offering a 360-degree view feature. Amazon also collaborated with Vogue America on Common Threads and with the British Fashion Council for Amazon Fashion x London Fashion Week. GlobalData predicted resale would grow from $24 billion in 2018 to $51 billion by 2023. The article notes that for resale to be truly sustainable, products must be designed for durability, requiring a shift in design thinking. It criticizes Italian fashion institutions like Pitti Immagine, CNMI, and Altaroma for lacking global strategies.
