Guy Brett (1942-2021): Curator and Critic Who Championed Latin American Art in Europe

Guy Brett, a British curator and critic who passed away in 2021, played a pivotal role in presenting Latin American art to European viewers starting in the 1960s. He initiated his journalism career at The Yorkshire Post and The Times, eventually becoming the visual arts editor for City Limits magazine from 1981 to 1983. A transformative trip to Latin America in 1973 greatly impacted him. In 1977, he curated the exhibition "We want People to know the Truth: Patchwork pictures from Chile," which traveled across the UK until 1978. His 1986 publication "Through Our Own Eyes" received acclaim from Lucy Lippard. The 1990 "Transcontinental" exhibition at Birmingham's Ikon Gallery marked a significant achievement. He fostered relationships with artists such as Hélio Oiticica and Lygia Clark, and his passing elicited heartfelt tributes, particularly from Brazil.
