Gustave Fayet's Total Artwork at Fontfroide Abbey Revealed in New Tour
Fontfroide Abbey, a 12th-century Cistercian monument near Narbonne, was transformed into a Gesamtkunstwerk by Gustave Fayet and his wife Madeleine d'Andoque after they purchased it in early 1908. Over a decade, they restored the abandoned site, with Madeleine handling interiors and Gustave overseeing construction, selling major paintings by Gauguin and Cézanne to fund the work. Fayet commissioned artists Richard Burgsthal and Odilon Redon, along with regional craftsmen like mason Pierre Vassal, ironworker Jean Trouilhet, and cabinetmaker Molinier. Burgsthal created murals and stained glass windows (1912-1924), while Redon painted three large frescoes—Le Jour, La Nuit, and Le Silence—in the library in 1910. The décor blends Spanish azulejos, ceramics from Manises, and architectural elements from other Fayet properties, such as a monumental fireplace from the Château du Parc in Pézenas and a terracotta chariot from Vaux-le-Vicomte. The exhibition "Gustave Fayet, symphonies décoratives à Fontfroide" runs from April 18, 2026, to January 27, 2027, at the abbey, which remains in the family's hands.
