Gustave Caillebotte (Paris, 1848 – Gennevilliers, 1894) is often overshadowed by Claude Monet, yet he was a pivotal figure in Impressionism. His 1875 painting 'The Floor Scrapers' (Les raboteurs de parquet) broke new ground by focusing on urban proletariat, a subject previously ignored in art. The work depicts three workers in a Parisian apartment, highlighting the harsh manual labor and everyday life inside the city's buildings, contrasting with his contemporaries' preference for landscapes.
