Gustav Klimt Foundation launches online database for centenary

digital · 2026-04-26

The Gustav Klimt Foundation, established in 2013 from Ursula Ucicky's donation of works collected by her husband Gustav Ucicky (one of Klimt's illegitimate sons), will launch the Gustav Klimt Database in March 2018. The publicly accessible portal at klimt-database.com will initially publish Klimt's personal correspondence, photographic portraits, and other biographical details contextualized within his artistic output. A second release is planned for July 14, 2018, Klimt's birthday, marking the centenary of his death. The foundation holds about 10 paintings and 15 drawings by Klimt, with 4 paintings and around 10 drawings from Ucicky's estate. Separately, the Museo del Prado in Madrid has digitized its entire archive of 12,000 documents spanning 200 years, while the Harvard Art Museum is preparing for the Bauhaus centenary in 2019 with The Bauhaus Special Collection, an online database of over 32,000 works curated by Robert Wiesenberger.
