Gusmão and Paiva's Abissological Retrospective at Hangar Bicocca, with Pena's Viagem Macaca at Galleria Zero
In 2009, artists João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva, based in Lisbon, established the Sociedade Internacional de Abissology to explore the paradoxes of reality. Their retrospective at Milan's Hangar Bicocca, curated by Vicente Todolí, showcased nearly 40 works created since 2005, including 11 new pieces. The exhibition turned the expansive postindustrial venue into a dark space where silent 16mm and 35mm films projected everyday objects into astonishing nanoworlds. Utilizing high-speed cameras that capture 3,000 frames per second, they highlighted subtle movements. Featured works included The Soup (2009) and Falling Trees (2014). Additionally, Galleria Zero exhibited Gonçalo Pena's Viagem Macaca, with sketches referencing figures like Karl Marx. This exhibition took place in October 2014.
