Gus Van Sant's Multidisciplinary Retrospective at Turin's Museo del Cinema

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Gus Van Sant's exhibition 'Icone' at the Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Turin, open from October 6, 2016 to January 9, 2017, showcases over 180 works spanning his career in film, photography, painting, and music. The show, co-produced with the Cinémathèque française in Paris and the Cinémathèque de Lausanne, includes polaroids, photographic cut-ups, watercolors, paintings (including a portrait of River Phoenix and a series exhibited at Gagosian in 2011), original photographic prints, preparatory drawings for feature films, unseen 16mm shorts, music videos, making-ofs, and montages of iconic film sequences. Curated by Matthieu Orléan, the itinerant retrospective premiered in Paris and will move to the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne in April. Van Sant, who won his first award at Turin's Glbt Film Festival in 1988 for 'Mala Noche', noted the city's resemblance to his hometown Portland. He also revealed a new project about disabled cartoonist John Callahan, with whom he grew up in Portland.
