Gus Van Sant's 'Don't Worry' Honors Cartoonist John Callahan

Gus Van Sant's film 'Don't Worry' (released August 29 via Adler Entertainment) tells the story of John Callahan, a quadriplegic cartoonist who overcame alcoholism through art. Joaquin Phoenix stars as Callahan, delivering a remarkable performance. The project originated 20 years ago when Robin Williams acquired the rights to Callahan's memoir 'Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot' and wanted Van Sant to direct. After Williams' death, Van Sant revived the project, staying closer to the book and incorporating details from interviews with Callahan. Phoenix prepared by studying footage of Callahan, including a 1993 '60 Minutes' episode and a 2007 Dutch documentary, but aimed to create his own interpretation rather than an imitation. He also spent time in a rehabilitation facility. Key supporting roles include Jonah Hill as Donnie, a wealthy AA sponsor; Jack Black as Dexter, a talkative alcoholic; and Rooney Mara as Annu, a composite of several women in Callahan's life. Callahan's cartoons were published for 27 years by Willamette Week and appeared in over 200 publications. He also wrote 10 books and created two animated TV shows and a short film. The film blends documentary and biographical styles, exploring themes of redemption and the obsessive nature of artistic creation.
