Gulnur Mukazhanova's 'Dowry of the Soul' at CHAT Hong Kong explores Kazakh heritage through textiles
Gulnur Mukazhanova's exhibition, titled 'Dowry of the Soul,' is currently on display at Hong Kong's Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile (CHAT) until March 1. This showcase features her exploration of Kazakhstan's identity in the post-Soviet era through the use of traditional materials. Based in Berlin, Mukazhanova produces felt tableaux, textile installations, and photographs, reinterpreting Central Asian art forms in a modern context. She has a background in textile design and conceptual art from Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin, where she was inspired by T. Pranyko and Saule Bapanova. Notable works include 'Post-Nomadic Reality – Untitled' (2025), 'False Hope or Moment of the Present' (2018), and the 'Global Society' photographic series (2013). Future exhibitions are planned for Kunsthaus Dahlem, the Kyiv Biennial, and Whitworth Gallery in November.
