Guido Guidi's Lunar Photographs Collected in New MACK Book

publication · 2026-04-27

MACK has published 'Lunario', a new volume by Italian photographer Guido Guidi (born Cesena, 1941). The book gathers photographs made between 1968 and 1999 that directly or indirectly reference the moon. It includes a conversation with Antonello Frongia, a long-time collaborator. The volume was presented in Milan at Viasaterna gallery, which represents Guidi, in collaboration with Micamera bookstore, with Nicoletta Leonardi joining the discussion. Guidi notes that the moon can be a dangerous subject for photographers, but his rural upbringing gave him time to observe it, linking it to his adolescent memories of war and studying Einstein. He connects his work to American photographers like Robert Adams and Lewis Baltz, whose printing style he finds akin to the sidereal. The book's earliest images come from an exercise assigned by Italo Zannier during Guidi's studies at the Corso Superiore di Disegno Industriale in Venice. Guidi also cites Osvaldo Licini's 'Amalassunte' paintings, published in Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti's magazine SeleArte, as an influence. The volume engages with art history, literature, and cinema, notably Michelangelo Antonioni's 'L'Eclisse'. The book is priced at £35.
