Guggenheim Venice Opens Conservation Lab for Contemporary Art

institutional · 2026-04-26

A brand new conservation and research lab has opened its doors at Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, home to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, thanks to support from the EFG banking group. This space gives visitors a chance to see how sculptures from the collection are restored. Current projects include Robert Delaunay's "Finestre aperte simultaneamente 1° parte, 3° motivo" from 1912, Piet Mondrian's "Composizione n. 1 con grigio e rosso" from 1938-39, and Jackson Pollock's "Movimento gracidante" from 1946. According to Director Karole P. B. Vail, the lab emphasizes the importance of making cultural heritage more accessible. This effort builds on a partnership with Italy’s National Research Council from 2023 to improve preventive conservation.
