Guggenheim UBS MAP Initiative Exhibition at South London Gallery Surveys Latin American Art

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Between June 10 and September 4, 2016, the South London Gallery presented 'Under the Same Sun: Art from Latin America Today,' curated by Pablo Léon de la Barra as part of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative. This exhibition showcased the works of 40 artists from 14 different countries, spanning from the 1960s to 2014, and prompted inquiries regarding its title. Highlights included Gabriel Sierra's 'Hang It All' (2006) and Tania Bruguera's 'Tatlin’s Whisper #6 (Havana version).' Political themes were prominent, with pieces like Carlos Motta's 'Brief History of US Interventions in Latin America Since 1946' (2005–09) addressing oppression. While the exhibition sought to expand narratives, it occasionally reinforced established stereotypes. The article appeared in ArtReview in September 2016.
