Guggenheim to Screen Gordon and Parreno's Zidane Portrait

exhibition · 2026-05-21

Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno's 2006 film "Zidane, a 21st century portrait" will screen at the Guggenheim Museum in New York from June 11 to July 19, 2026, timed with the FIFA World Cup. The two-channel video piece captures a 90-minute La Liga match between Real Madrid and Villarreal from the perspective of French soccer legend Zinédine Zidane, using 17 cameras placed throughout Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The work, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006, has been acquired by the Guggenheim as one of 17 unique versions. Other editions will be on view at the Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Bass Museum. The film offers an intimate, voyeuristic portrait of Zidane, including his dismissal from the 2006 World Cup after head-butting Marco Materazzi, and references Francisco de Goya and Diego Velázquez. The screening comes amid dampened enthusiasm for the World Cup due to controversies surrounding FIFA, including migrant labor abuse in Qatar and the awarding of a "FIFA Peace Prize" to Donald Trump.
