Guggenheim Sues to Recover Picasso Stolen in 1961
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum has initiated legal action to reclaim Picasso's "Femme dans un fauteuil" (1918), which disappeared from the University of Pittsburgh in 1961. This oil painting, measuring 13.5 by 10.5 inches, was reported missing on February 6, 1961, after being showcased in the Students Union building. Following the theft, the Pittsburgh Police were notified, and the FBI conducted an investigation, but the case eventually went cold. After more than sixty years, the artwork has come to light again. In other news, a 17th-century still life by Flemish artist Clara Peeters will be recognized at the National Museum of Norway. Additionally, the Village of Industry & Art aims to create 45 affordable artist units by fall 2027, and the BlackStar Film Festival showcased six films focused on art and resistance.
