Guggenheim's Spanish Painting Survey Challenges Modernist Origins

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From November 17, 2006 to March 28, 2007, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City presented 'Time, Truth and History – El Greco to Picasso,' curated by Carmen Gimenez. The exhibition argued that Spanish painting from the 16th century onward fueled the historical avant-garde, particularly cubism and surrealism, with Picasso and Gris as key examples. It featured works spanning 350 years, including pieces by El Greco, Velazquez, Picasso, Gris, Goya, Zurbaran, Ribera, Murillo, Juan Sanchez Cotan, Juan Van Der Hamen, and Carreno. The show questioned the notion of a clean break with the past in modern art, suggesting instead a continuous line of influence. It highlighted the complex international cross-pollination in art history, noting Italian influences on Spanish masters like Velazquez and Ribera, who borrowed from Caravaggio and Titian. Despite this, the exhibition identified a distinct Spanish aesthetic in still-life painters like Cotan, whose simplified compositions from 1602 deflected Dutch influence. The presentation also included works by Goya, who presaged later movements, and noted Manet's role in resurrecting El Greco. The exhibition's thematic approach sometimes prioritized conceptual connections over formal comparisons, as seen in subway advertisements that mistakenly attributed a Velazquez portrait to El Greco.
