Guggenheim NY Acquires First Robotic Artwork by Sun Yuan & Peng Yu

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Guggenheim Museum in New York has commissioned its first robotic artwork for its permanent collection: 'Can’t Help Myself' by Chinese artist duo Sun Yuan and Peng Yu. The piece features a large robotic arm wielding a spatula that continuously attempts to contain a pool of blood-red liquid, performing an endless, hypnotic dance. The work is part of the exhibition 'Tales of Our Time,' a solo show dedicated to the artists, running until March 10, 2017. The artists state: 'Humans must learn from machines if they want to be able to control them. People from other eras struggle to understand the narratives of the present, and likewise it will be difficult for us to imagine the narratives of the future. This is because machines, which are now an integral part of our culture, are constantly changing and thereby accelerating changes in humankind.'
