institutional · 2026-05-04

In New York, the Guggenheim Museum has initiated the Robert Mapplethorpe Collection Research Initiative, a three-year endeavor centered on its collection of Mapplethorpe's photographs. Additionally, a Conservation Fellowship for Photography has been established, supported by the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. This foundation contributed numerous works by Mapplethorpe in 1993, resulting in a detailed public archive. This contribution has facilitated photography exhibitions, the formation of an advisory council, and the expansion of the collection. Richard Armstrong, the museum's director, expressed appreciation for the foundation's assistance. Presently, the Guggenheim is showcasing "Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now," a two-part exhibition, with the second segment running until January 5, 2020, featuring works from Mapplethorpe and six other artists, while the first part ended in July 2019.
