Guggenheim Bilbao's cautious optimism: pandemic response and 2020 program
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao reopened on June 1, 2020, with a maximum of 2,400 daily entries (40% capacity) and a one-way route. Director Juan Ignacio Vidarte reported a 74% drop in visitors in the first half of 2020 (127,000 vs 486,268 in 2019). July visits reached 30% of normal, double expectations, with 54% foreign tourists (mostly French, Dutch, Belgian, German) arriving by car. The museum launched the 'Bienvenidos a casa' campaign offering free summer entry to general ticket buyers and a bring-a-friend option for 20,000 Friends of the Museum. Estimated losses are 8–9 million euros. The 2020 exhibition calendar saw minor changes: Lygia Clark and William Kentridge shows opened post-lockdown; Richard Artschwager exhibition continues; Olafur Eliasson's retrospective extended to April 4, 2021; Lee Krasner opens in September; a Kandinsky retrospective in collaboration with Barbican Centre London is planned for autumn; the El Anatsui show was canceled; an exhibition on 1920s art postponed to 2021. Vidarte expressed confidence in the future of international tourism and large exhibitions, noting that current conditions offer a unique intimate museum experience.
