Guggenheim Bilbao Announces 2021 Exhibition Program with Eight Shows

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has unveiled its 2021 exhibition calendar, featuring eight shows that emphasize female artists and international collaborations. The museum reported only 315,908 visitors in 2020, a steep drop from 1.7 million in 2019, with 61% Spanish and 50% Basque visitors due to the pandemic. Director Juan Ignacio Vidarte and curator Lucía Aguirre presented the program online amid Spain's third COVID-19 wave. Highlights include a retrospective of American painter Alice Neel (co-produced with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, opening in September), "Women of Abstraction" (co-produced with the Centre Pompidou, closing the season), and "Film & Video" focusing on dance and performance by female artists Alex Reynolds, Cecilia Bengolea, and Sharon Lockhart. The year opens with "Bilbao and Painting" (January 29–August 29), exploring the city's fin-de-siècle art scene influenced by French Impressionism. In May, "The Roaring Twenties" (May 7–September 19, co-produced with Kunsthaus Zürich) examines Weimar Republic modernity through art, design, and social life, with a ballroom reconstruction by stage director Calixto Bieto. "The Line of Wit" (June 11–February 6) reinterprets the museum's collection with humor and experimentation. Ongoing exhibitions include Olafur Eliasson (until April) and Kandinsky (opened in autumn). The museum aims to demonstrate safety and attract local audiences while maintaining quality through international partnerships.
