Guccini's Bologna Home Becomes Memorial Site

Italian singer-songwriter Francesco Guccini, who died on Thursday at age 86, is being mourned by fans who have gathered outside his former home at Via Paolo Fabbri 43 in Bologna. The address, which was also the title of his most famous album, became a pilgrimage site where dozens of people have left flowers, notes, photographs, and dedications since Thursday morning. Guccini lived there from the 1960s until 2012, when he moved to Pavana, a small town in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The street, located in the Cirenaica district in the eastern part of Bologna, was originally named Via Tripoli but was renamed after Paolo Fabbri, an anti-fascist partisan, after World War II. Guccini's home became a gathering place for fellow singer-songwriters and writers, who would visit and stay late into the night, listening to him play guitar and drinking red wine. The song "Via Paolo Fabbri 43" includes lyrics that reference his lively home life, mentioning a party with cats and poets at dawn. Music critic Riccardo Bertoncelli, who once needed to contact Guccini, simply found his number in the phone book and called him, demonstrating Guccini's accessibility. Fans have also shared detailed accounts of their visits to the apartment. A mural dedicated to Guccini has been painted on Via San Vitale in Bologna. The outpouring of grief highlights Guccini's legacy as an approachable figure who embraced his fans, a stark contrast to modern privacy norms.
