Gucci-Backed Exhibition at Daelim Museum Showcases Seoul's Alternative Art Spaces
From April 17 to July 12, 2020, the Daelim Museum in Seoul presented 'No Space, Just A Place: Eterotopia,' an exhibition exploring the city's independent art scene. Curated by Myriam Ben Salah, incoming executive director of the Renaissance Society, the show featured ten local alternative venues alongside five international artists: Meriem Bennani, Olivia Erlanger, Cécile B. Evans, Kang Seung Lee, and Martine Syms. Funded by Gucci and inspired by Creative Director Alessandro Michele's thoughts on heterotopia, the exhibition examined how creative disruption transforms spaces into meaningful places. Installations originally shown in unconventional Seoul locations like meatyards, warehouses, private homes, and abandoned shops were displayed. A video produced by ArtReview for Gucci, narrated by Andy St. Louis and filmed by Aaron Choe with cinematography by Seongil Lee and translations by Vicky Won, offered a virtual tour of the exhibition. The project highlighted both local and global artistic practices, focusing on the social and cultural forces that shape alternative art communities.
