Gubbio Biennale revival could relaunch city's homeless sculpture museum
After a 17-year break, the Biennale di Scultura di Gubbio, the second oldest sculpture biennial following Venice, is making a comeback. Last held in 2006, this event may finally catalyze the establishment of a permanent site for the Museo di Scultura Contemporanea, Italy’s inaugural museum dedicated to contemporary sculpture, which has yet to secure a physical location. Curator Giorgio Bonomi, who has overseen the Biennale five times, initially proposed the museum in 2006. The collection features works from artists like Getulio Alviani and Arnaldo Pomodoro, acquired through purchase prizes, with later contributions from creators such as LeWitt and Uncini. An outdoor sculpture park in Parco Ranghiasci includes pieces by various artists but has faced neglect. Bonomi emphasizes the need for a strong partnership between the Biennale and the museum, aiming to invigorate focus on emerging talents alongside established figures.
