Gubbio Biennale Returns After Hiatus, Focuses on Italian Artists Under 35

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Italy's second oldest biennial, the Biennale di Gubbio, is set to make its return in October 2023 after a prolonged hiatus. Established in 1956, this event transitioned from a ceramics exhibition to a contemporary art showcase, featuring notable artists such as Richard Deacon and Sol LeWitt. The last edition took place in 2016. Curators Ludovico Pratesi and Marco Bassan, with the endorsement of Gubbio's culture councillor Giovanna Uccellani and Spazio Taverna, have named this edition 'Imagina,' drawing inspiration from Franco Maria Ricci's 1986 work. Nearly 40 Italian artists under 35 will present site-specific installations across seven sections at Palazzo dei Consoli and Palazzo Ducale, aiming to establish a sustainable cultural model for historic cities.
