Guardi's Venetian Views Return to Venice from Lisbon Museum
Ten paintings by Francesco Guardi (Venice, 1712–1793) from the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon are on display at Ca' Rezzonico, Museo del Settecento Veneziano, until June 8, 2026. The works, dated between 1770 and 1790, showcase Guardi's distinctive style with loose brushwork and non-aligned proportions, moving away from Canaletto's geometric precision. Subjects include the Festa della Sensa in Piazza San Marco, the Molo with the Doge's Palace, and a regatta on the Grand Canal near the Rialto Bridge. The exhibition also features drawings from Venetian civic collections, including Il Gran Teatro La Fenice and two watercolored sheets of Le nozze del duca di Polignac. Guardi's intimate, atmospheric depictions reflect a Venice in decline.
