Guangzhou Image Triennial 2021: Rethinking Collectivity

The Guangdong Museum of Art has announced the Guangzhou Image Triennial 2021, themed "Rethinking Collectivity" and curated by Wang Shaoqiang, the museum's director. The triennial aims to renew the museum's identity by embracing all arts and integrating scientific and humanistic disciplines. Wang Shaoqiang noted that the pandemic has heightened feelings of impotence and isolation, prompting a reexamination of community bonds. In China, where collectivism is culturally central, the triennial questions these principles through a contemporary, multidimensional lens. The event comprises a thematic exhibition and an archival show, developed collaboratively by a curatorial team. The thematic exhibition is divided into three sections: "Globalscape" curated by Gerardo Mosquera, co-founder of the Havana Biennial; "Why Collectivity?" by Hyperimage Group (formed in 2018 by Dong Bing Feng, Xiang Zairong, and Teng Yuning), focusing on ecology, the common, and collective memories; and "Frontier Mentality" by Yang Beichen, a member of the Prada Foundation's Thought Council, exploring frontier complexities. Mosquera's section addresses the global landscape in the age of images, where proximity through photography and video has made worldwide landscapes accessible. The triennial runs from March 9 to May 29, 2021, in Guangzhou, China.
