Group Exhibition 'The Woman Destroyed' at P.P.O.W Explores Female Experience Through Six Artists

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From June 30 to July 29, 2016, P.P.O.W gallery in New York presented 'The Woman Destroyed,' a group exhibition featuring six artists responding to Simone de Beauvoir's work. Robin F. Williams contributed 'Bag Lady' (2016), depicting a woman hooded with a bag in a trippy palette, and 'In the Gutter' (2015), showing a model squatting over a gutter. Elizabeth Glaessner displayed 20 small paintings from 2016, including 'Circling' and 'Helping a Friend,' exploring psychological realms with gestural mark-making. David Mramor, also known as Enid Ellen, presented photographs of his late mother embellished with acrylic marks. Alison Schulnik's 'Centaurette in Forest' (2015) depicted a frantic lady centaur, while Lauren Kelly's digital print 'Wall Flower' (2011) showed a doll in a cake-frosting dress. Jessica Stoller's sculpture 'Slip' (2016) featured a porcelain bust balancing pastries. The exhibition, located at 535 West 22nd Street, addressed themes of female experience, frustration with tropes, and inner-outer dichotomies, drawing from de Beauvoir's 'The Woman Destroyed' and 'The Second Sex' (1949).
