Grenoble's drawing collection on show at Padua's Palazzo Zabarella

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Palazzo Zabarella in Padua presents a major exhibition of drawings from the Musée de Grenoble, the second largest drawing collection in France after the Centre Pompidou. The show, titled 'Matisse Picasso Modigliani Mirò', features 130 works by 47 artists, spanning from Paul Signac's illustrated letters to Alexander Calder's 1965 untitled piece. The collection was largely built by director Pierre-André Farci (1919–1949), who acquired avant-garde works and secured prestigious donations. Organized by Fondazione Bano under Federico Bano and scientific director Fernando Mazzocca, the exhibition explores the first half of the 20th century and the relationships between Italian artists and Paris. Highlights include Henri Matisse's sketches from Series H and the Icarus plate from Jazz, Pablo Picasso's Ritratto di Olga, and works by Amedeo Modigliani, Jean Cocteau, Aristide Maillol, Balthus, and Léonard Foujita. The fragile nature of drawings means they are rarely displayed, even at their home institution.
