Greg Goldberg's Solo Show 'Northern Light' Opens at Stephan Stoyanov Gallery

Greg Goldberg's debut solo exhibition 'Northern Light' runs from April 17 through May 31 at Stephan Stoyanov Gallery on 29 Orchard Street in New York. The artist's abstract oil paintings explore color and light, influenced by art historical figures like Brice Marden, Emil Nolde, Peter Paul Rubens, Pontormo, Mark Rothko, and Donald Judd. Goldberg's father, an architect, shaped his approach to materials and order. After graduating from Skidmore College in 1996, Goldberg initially created representational work, including a Surfer series that led the Museum of Modern Art to purchase eight paintings in 2003. He shifted to abstraction about a decade ago, focusing on capturing natural light through color, with titles often indicating location and date. His studio in Manhattan features a north-facing window overlooking a parking lot, providing ample light. Goldberg uses thin glazes and keeps meticulous records of each painting's progress. He also creates quick gouache drawings, encouraged by friend Michael Toenges, to experiment with color combinations. The artist's work has been shown in places like his parents' Connecticut backyard and the Dominican Republic, reflecting environmental influences on his palette.
