Greenspon Gallery's 2018 Summer Exhibition Explores Eroticism Through Historical and Contemporary Works

Greenspon Gallery in New York City presented the group exhibition 'The Seam, the Fault, the Flaw' from June 28 to August 3, 2018. The show featured works by Pierre Klossowski, Louis Eilshemius, Jimmy Wright, Emily Sundblad, Loretta Fahrenholz, E'wao Kagoshima, and Eliza Douglas. Klossowski's colored pencil drawing 'Le commandeur de St. Vit séduit par le jeune Ogier' depicted an ambiguous erotic encounter, while Eilshemius contributed watercolors and an oil painting of nymphs in pastoral settings. Jimmy Wright's graphite drawings portrayed 1970s leather bars and bathhouse scenes, contrasting with his better-known floral paintings. Emily Sundblad created painterly sketches of orgies on barbequed paper using eyeliner as medium, inspired by Klossowski's text 'La Monnaie Vivante'. The exhibition connected contemporary erotic expression with historical precedents, including medievalism, classicism, and expressionism. Works by Fahrenholz, Kagoshima, and Douglas introduced pop aesthetics and cerebral approaches to bodily themes. The show was located at 71 Morton Street between Greenwich and Hudson streets in the West Village.
