Greenlandic Artist Inuuteq Storch to Represent Denmark at Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-04-27

For the first time, the Danish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale will feature a native artist. Inuuteq Storch, a Greenlandic photographer born in Sisimiut in 1989, will present the exhibition 'Rise of the Sunken Sun' at the Giardini. Curated by Louise Wolthers and commissioned by the Dutch Arts Foundation, the show marks the pavilion's first presentation dedicated to photography and its first by an indigenous person. Storch's work addresses Greenland's colonial history, including the 1951 'Little Danes' experiment where 22 Inuit children were sent to Danish foster families. The exhibition juxtaposes historical and family photographs with contemporary snapshots, aiming to correct external perceptions of Greenland. It includes six thematic series, digitized historical photos by John Møller (the first professional Greenlandic photographer), musical compositions, and a sculptural red disk evoking the Greenlandic flag. The project aligns with curator Adriano Pedrosa's theme 'Stranieri Ovunque' (Foreigners Everywhere), which emphasizes indigenous art.
