Greenland Opens New Qaqortoq Airport as Part of Tourism Infrastructure Expansion
A new airport has been launched in Qaqortoq, the largest town in South Greenland, improving the region's transport system. Previously accessible solely by helicopter or boat, Qaqortoq now benefits from air travel. The first flight from Nuuk was conducted by Air Greenland, which transported the current prime minister along with two former prime ministers. The terminal boasts expansive windows and high ceilings, inspired by Nuuk's airport design. This facility is the second of three planned airports, with Nuuk's hub set to open in 2024 and Ilulissat's airfield expected to be completed this autumn. The airport is intended to enhance tourism and stimulate economic growth, with each US narrow-body flight contributing approximately $200,000 in local spending. The inauguration included speeches in Greenlandic and Danish, followed by a traditional kaffemik event.
