Green-Wood Cemetery opens Green-House welcome center in restored 1895 Victorian greenhouse
Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn has unveiled the Green-House, a $34 million educational and welcome center that features a restored Victorian greenhouse from 1895, the only one of its kind still in existence in the city. The facility, designed by Architecture Research Office (ARO), comprises classrooms, galleries, offices, and archival storage, serving as a community entry point opposite the main gates. President Meera Joshi notes that it alleviates public concerns regarding cemeteries. The Weir Greenhouse, purchased for $1.6 million in 2012, has been beautifully restored. Both the greenhouse and the cemetery are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The opening exhibition presents installations by local artist Jean Shin. ARO’s Stephen Cassell and Kim Yao emphasize the modern design's welcoming essence, reflecting Green-Wood's adaptation as burial rates decline.
