Green Papaya Art Projects Closes After Fire Destroys Archives, Materials to be Preserved Digitally

institutional · 2026-04-20

Green Papaya Art Projects, Metro Manila's longest-running artist-led space, has ceased operations following a fire in June that devastated its archives. The blaze destroyed over 300 artworks donated by artists, along with exhibition records and various objects. Founded by Norberto 'Peewee' Roldan and Donna Miranda, the venue had planned to close in 2020 after two decades as a hub for experimental practices and critical discourse. In recent years, programming was overseen by Merv Espina. During the pandemic, the organization actively protested government restrictions on civic freedoms. Surviving materials will be housed at Asia Art Archive and digitized for access. Roldan emphasized that Green Papaya aimed to invest in future possibilities rather than perpetuate itself indefinitely.
