Green Island's 15th Anniversary: Artist Beehives and 2000 sqm Green Area Returned to Milan

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

AmazeLab, under the leadership of Claudia Zanfi, commemorates the 15th anniversary of Green Island during Salone del Mobile with a sustainable initiative that culminates in a finissage on Sunday, April 17, from 10 am to 1 pm at Orti di Via Padova (MM2 Udine), in partnership with Legambiente. This project is part of Progettare Paesaggi Futuri and introduces the world's inaugural Apiario d'Artista (Artist Apiary), showcasing twelve vibrant beehives crafted by international designers such as Bee Collective, Judith Cowan, and Simone Berti. These hives are situated in a 2000 sqm green space revitalized with community involvement, akin to the Isola Pepe Verde area in Milan. The finissage features a global honey tasting led by Conapi/Mielizia and a workshop for creating terrace hives from eco-friendly km0 urban wood with Woodworker Unplugged's Raul Luraschi. Additionally, the Arbre Magique (Biodiversity Tree) by Volpati/Nucara, constructed from repurposed materials, is displayed at Stazione Garibaldi. This initiative draws attention to the concerning decline of bee populations, with a 2015 EU study revealing a 50% reduction in Italian honey production over seven years and that 9.2% of European bee species are threatened by pollution, pesticides, and climate change.
