Green Gallery Wins YAP Rome 2018 at MAXXI
STUDIOD3R and Marcello Fantuz have won the Young Architects Program (YAP) Rome 2018 with their installation 'Green Gallery' at MAXXI. The project, a lightweight grid of about 120 square meters, will host semi-spontaneous vegetation from Rome's parks Monte Mario and Villa Ada, creating a natural oasis on the museum's piazza. YAP, now in its 19th US edition and 7th in Italy, is organized by MAXXI in collaboration with MoMA/MoMA PS1 and has expanded to include Istanbul Modern (Turkey), MMCA (South Korea), and CONSTRUCTO (Chile). This year, MAXXI merged YAP with the pan-European Future Architecture Platform, co-financed by Creative Europe Programme. The jury, including Hou Hanru, Margherita Guccione, Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, Pippo Ciorra, Sean Anderson, Carmen Andriani, Paola Nicolin, Jeanette Plaut, and Kim Hyoungmi, selected Green Gallery for its dialogue with MAXXI's volumetric architecture, contrasting lightness and nature. The installation runs from June 13 to October 21, 2018. Meanwhile, at MoMA PS1 in New York, 'Hide & Seek' by Dream The Combine (Jennifer Newsom and Tom Carruthers) with Clayton Binkley of ARUP won YAP 2018, featuring kinetic and reactive elements, mirrors, fog, and a dance floor. Klaus Biesenbach noted the project engages horizontally with Long Island's vertical growth.
