Greek Terracotta Returned to Italy After 50 Years, Fashion Auction for Milan Cathedral, Street Art on Migrants

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

During a ceremony in Athens, a Greek terracotta slab, which had been taken from Rome's Antiquarium of the Roman Forum in August 1961 by a German collector, was returned to Italy. The artifact, adorned with a relief mask, was presented to Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini by Greek Minister Aristides Baltas. This restitution process began in 2014 when the collector's widow sent the slab to the Greek Embassy in Berlin, from where it was forwarded to Athens. The slab will be displayed in the new Museum of the Roman Forum located in the convent of Santa Francesca Romana. Additionally, on April 19, 2016, a public auction at Museo del Duomo's Sala delle Colonne will benefit the 'Adotta una guglia' restoration project for Milan Cathedral, featuring items from renowned designers. Street artist Eron also created a piece in Palazzo Mattei di Paganica addressing the migrant crisis.
